Santral İstanbul - Faculty of Law
İstanbul
2016

Ongoing
1915 m2

Designed in 1944 by Seyfi Arkan, the most important name in Turkey’s modern architecture, within the former Silahtarağa Power Station and current Santral Istanbul campus, the building was vacant after its original function was terminated in 1986. Although we had initially designed it as a student center in the earlier drawings, it was later decided that the building would be used as the School of Law.

During its transformation, the former interior space and mass characteristics were preserved to a large extent.  Following the decision to restore without demolishing, we tried to intervene as little as possible on the mass and follow the footsteps of Seyfi Arkan in our interventions. We visibly distinguished the additions demanded by new regulations, such as the fire escape.

We took the large power turbine within the building inside the courtroom and put it on display. While the old and new blended occasionally, we tried to separate them in the most legible way possible.
